PES – A STRANGE BUT FAMILIAR CONCEPT

PES – A STRANGE BUT FAMILIAR CONCEPT
Payments for ecosystem services (PES) is an economic tool that regulates the relationship between service providers and beneficiaries of ecosystem services. To put it simply, organizations and individuals that use one or several natural ecosystem services must pay for natural ecosystem services.
In fact, many countries around the world have applied PES extremely successfully. This is also considered an effective solution for regenerating the environment and there are hundreds of models from experimental to practical around the world.
Payment for ecosystem services includes two forms as follows:
– Direct payment: payment in cash to service providers, such as water usage fees, ecotourism fees, public sanitation fees,…
– Indirect payments: do not pay in cash but create land ownership, build infrastructure, build capacity, etc.
Vietnam currently applies a number of payments for ecosystem services in practice such as: Collecting tour service fees for protected marine areas and wetlands, co-management model of aquatic resources, or develop environmentally friendly aquaculture methods in some coastal areas with the support of international organizations and related industries…
PES is essentially a method to help regulate and regenerate the ecosystem in general, to support the provision and regulation of services from the benefits that the ecosystem brings. References: Journal of Science and Development 2013, Pictorial of Ethnic and Mountainous Areas,…
